FRONTLINE's "The Gulf War" is a comprehensive and critical analysis of the 1990-1991 war in which more than one million troops faced off against each other in the deserts of the Gulf states. From the Allied coalition's air war, to the ground assault, to the liberation of Kuwait, and the fallout of Saddam Hussein's retaining power, "The Gulf War" deconstructs what really happened, how it happened and why.

Genre: Documentary
Unfinished Business, a BBC documentary about the bombardment of East Mostar by the Croatian Army in the fall of 1993, was first broadcasted in 1994. It was later shown in an ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia) court in November 2001.
Former Bosnian Croat leaders, Mladen Naletilic “Tuta” and Vinko Martinovic Stela were charged with crimes committed in the Croat-Muslim conflict in Central Bosnia and Western Herzegovina, including the town of Mostar. Portions of the documentary were shown by the prosecution .
The author of the documentary, Jeremy Bowen (below), was a key witness in the trial.
In the film, Bowen describes how about 60,000 inhabitants in East Mostar – most of them Muslims – face the choice: to fight or to die. The situation in East Mostar is described as worse than that in Gorazde, Sarajevo and Vukovar. Esad Humo, the BH (Bosnia and Herzegovina Army) Army commander in Mostar, was asked what he was fighting for. His answer to Bowen was, “for survival”.

The film shows the refugees expelled by the Croatian Army, HVO (Croatian Defence Council ) from their homes in West Mostar crossing the Neretva river at night, under fire from infantry weapons. Bowen calls that “a war crime with a military objective” in the film. He interviews a rape victim, doctors in the Mostar war hospital, the mother of a wounded daughter who did not live to be evacuated in the first batch of the wounded, a daughter who has lost her father and a number of other civilians.

The film also talks about the practice of using Muslim prisoners as human shields on the front lines. On the other hand, it also shows the “newly-acquired” cruelty of BH Army soldiers, taking the Croat prisoners to do forced labor. A soldier explains that it was “the law of the jungle” in Mostar at the time.

Vinko Martinović (below) was charged on the basis of individual criminal responsibility and superior criminal responsibility with crimes against humanity and war crimes. Martinović was arrested in Croatia and transferred to the ICTY on 9 August 1999. On 31 March 2003, he was sentenced by the Trial Chamber to 18 years. The judgement was confirmed by the Appeals Chamber on 3 May 2006.

Red Cliff is a Chinese epic war film based on the Battle of Red Cliffs (208-209 AD) and events during the end of the Han Dynasty and immediately prior to the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China. The film was directed by John Woo, and stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Hu Jun, Lin Chi-ling and Zhao Wei.

Within Asia, Red Cliff was released in two parts, totaling over four hours in length. The first part was released in July 2008 and the second in January 2009. Outside of Asia, a single 2½ hour film was released in 2009, though the two-part version was later released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United Kingdom. With an estimated budget of US$80 million, Red Cliff is the most expensive Asian-financed film to date. The first part of the film grossed US$124 million in Asia and broke the box office record previously held by Titanic in mainland China.
An IMDb Review: The Epic and Exciting Conclusion That Made it All Worth it.:
If the first part of the series was the set up, here is the pay off. I was disappointed at the end of the first part when big To Be Continued words filled the screen. But it was worth the wait. When it comes to Chinese epics, it gets no better than this. Mostly an incredibly long, epic battle, this second part pays off in spades. It's more exciting, smarter, and more edge of your seat. Every minute leaves you anticipating the next and the conclusion is very fitting. You almost don't want it to end, despite the huge running time. John Woo has succeeded in creating one of the grandest Asian epics ever made, and this series of films should cement him as one of the finest Asian filmmakers of all time.

World War II, or the Second World War (often abbreviated as WWII or WW2), was a global military conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945 which involved most of the world's nations, including all of the great powers, organised into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised. In a state of "total war", the major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by significant action against civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it was the deadliest conflict in human history, and it has been estimated that it resulted in fifty million to over seventy million fatalities.

During the chaos and destruction of WWII, ordinary men and women from all walks of life were thrown into fearsome, real-life situations worthy of any Hollywood movie - the only difference is that this series every story is true. Ordinary GIs and US Air Force and Navy personnel suddenly found themselves flying against the Japanese in China, jungle fighting in Burma and being dropped by submarine on enemy coasts at midnight. Each fifty-two minute story gives the viewer a clear view of the historical context, the strategic objective, and the tactical effort made by flyers, sailors and foot-soldiers – often in the most oppressive and life threatening situations – to win victory from the enemy.

'I know I'm going to die. I just don't know when. And worrying about when it's going to happen is killing me.' - U.S. Fighter Pilot, World War One.

When the First World War broke out, powered flight was barely a decade old. Within the first few months of the war, the first flimsy aircraft would change ground warfare forever. An Allied reconnaissance plane spotted a crucial weakness in the German lines at the Marne in August 1914. However, as the Allies massed in attack, a German aircraft saw them and the element of surprise was lost. Armies could no longer manoeuvre without being seen - and the era of trench warfare began.

At first rival pilots regarded each other as brothers, but the desperate need to knock out the enemy 'eye in the sky' led to the swift development of the first fighter aircraft. World War One would be fought with equal ferocity in the air as on the ground.
The life expectancy of a pilot could be as little as 3 - 6 weeks. 17,000 pilots would die in the air, earning the aircraft the grim nickname 'Flying Coffins'.
With rare film footage and the testimony of a WWI fighter pilot, FLYING COFFINS traces the development of the aeroplane over the course of the war, along with the tactics and technology used.
It also features stunning colour and air-to-air film of the WWI vintage replicas at Old Rheinbeck Aerodrome including the Sopwith Camel. Nieuport 11, Fokker Triplane and Albatross, as well as exclusive interviews with the men who restore and fly these magnificent old aircraft today.
- Note - Part 2 contains DVD extras which I decided to add in the release, about 15 mins of nice widescreen footage shot from various UK airshows and including flying examples of S.E.5 and Bristol F.2 Fighter among others. Because of aspect ratio difference I couldn't simply join it to the main movie.

BBC History of World War II is a 30-hour, 10-part, and 12-disc collection of documentaries about World War II.
The BBC History of World War II goes beyond even The World at War for its depth of scope, its breadth of analyses, and the high quality of its production values. This ambitious project by producer Laurence Rees, which also features a collector's booklet, is full of startling archival footage and illuminating eyewitness interviews that bring to life some of the most monumental events from the most monumental war in human history.

The focus on this set is clearly the war in Europe (only one disc, Horror in the East, is dedicated to the war with Japan) as told from an even-handed British perspective: interviews with German citizens make it understandable how Hitler appealed to a shattered and defeated nation, for example, and the The Road to War scrutinizes how a British government was caught unprepared for a re-armed Germany bent on domination. The collection is filled with poignantly fascinating moments, such as when an aging American veteran revisits the Omaha Beach he stormed on D-Day, and meets the elderly German who, as a teenager, was defending that section of the beach with his machine gun, or footage of Hitler's early political speeches, raging promises of things to come.

Roughly chronologically arranged, the set starts with The Nazis: A Warning from History, and works its way through all facets of the war, including the legacy of the Holocaust. (Some of the titles were previously released as single DVDs.) The presentation is particularly impressive. Each series has its own style: Dunkirk is a drama-documentary structured like a miniseries and reenactments are deftly interwoven with archival footage in a convincing motif. In War of the Century: When Hitler Fought Stalin, German and Russian veterans recall with chilling candor their particular universe of battle, and rare color combat footage combined with newly declassified Soviet documents offer new perspectives on the subject. The collection succeeds brilliantly in making it clear to a modern-day viewer what it was really like to live through those times.

For the war buff, the history enthusiast, the educator, or someone looking for a gift for any of the above, the BBC History of World War II is a title to consider. Even dedicated viewers of the History Channel will find something new and fascinating here. --Dan Vancini

Featuring a strong narrative and complete with original music scored dramatically for this program, this documentary makes for a strong and compelling narrative. Setting this program apart from others is the focus on some rarely covered parts of WWII such as Operation Barbarossa, the "phony war" period following the Polish invasion, the Flying Fortresses and the Manhattan Project.
This is the story of the greatest war of world history. This is the story of great individuals, of men who cast huge shadows across time. In this 13 part series we examine the events and personalities that drove World War Two.

In World War II: Behind Closed Doors, award winning documentary maker and historian Laurence Rees brings us a gripping new history of World War II one that is full of surprises, even for those who think they know the history. Drawing on material only available since the opening of archives in the East, Rees re-examines the key decisions made by Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt during the war. And as the truth about Stalins earlier friendly relationship with the Nazis is laid bare, a devastating and surprising picture of the Soviet leader emerges one that is deeply embarrassing for many Russians. The emotional core of the book is the amazing new testimony obtained from nearly a hundred separate witnesses from the period. Former Soviet secret policemen talk frankly for the first time about their repressive work; Allied seamen reveal how they braved the Arctic convoys; and Red Army veterans talk of how they killed Germans in hand-to-hand fighting on the Eastern Front. Accompanying a major six-part BBC2 history series, this enthralling narrative is a mix of high politics including the inside story of the Allies meetings at Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam and the dramatic personal experiences of those on the ground who bore the consequences of their decisions.
