'I know I'm going to die. I just don't know when. And worrying about when it's going to happen is killing me.' - U.S. Fighter Pilot, World War One.

When the First World War broke out, powered flight was barely a decade old. Within the first few months of the war, the first flimsy aircraft would change ground warfare forever. An Allied reconnaissance plane spotted a crucial weakness in the German lines at the Marne in August 1914. However, as the Allies massed in attack, a German aircraft saw them and the element of surprise was lost. Armies could no longer manoeuvre without being seen - and the era of trench warfare began.

At first rival pilots regarded each other as brothers, but the desperate need to knock out the enemy 'eye in the sky' led to the swift development of the first fighter aircraft. World War One would be fought with equal ferocity in the air as on the ground.
The life expectancy of a pilot could be as little as 3 - 6 weeks. 17,000 pilots would die in the air, earning the aircraft the grim nickname 'Flying Coffins'.
With rare film footage and the testimony of a WWI fighter pilot, FLYING COFFINS traces the development of the aeroplane over the course of the war, along with the tactics and technology used.
It also features stunning colour and air-to-air film of the WWI vintage replicas at Old Rheinbeck Aerodrome including the Sopwith Camel. Nieuport 11, Fokker Triplane and Albatross, as well as exclusive interviews with the men who restore and fly these magnificent old aircraft today.
- Note - Part 2 contains DVD extras which I decided to add in the release, about 15 mins of nice widescreen footage shot from various UK airshows and including flying examples of S.E.5 and Bristol F.2 Fighter among others. Because of aspect ratio difference I couldn't simply join it to the main movie.

on the last day of Byzantium, an eerie quiet fell over the city. Mehmet had told the Turks to rest, for a whole day, before the last assault. He gave the emperor time to walk with all that was left of the armies and nobles of Byzantium, once again into the great church, and there, after all their arguing in Florence, the Greeks and the Latins joined together in a last service, and the emperor went to the altar and was given the last rites.

The "Ghetto Theresienstadt" was established in NW Czechoslavakia. Terezin (Theresienstadt) was founded as a garrison town in the late 18th Century, during the reign of Emperor Joseph II and named after his mother, Empress Maria Theresa.
In WW2 the town served as a ghetto to which the Nazis expelled 140,000 Jews, mostly from the "Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia", but also from central and western Europe. The ghetto was controlled by the Zentralamt für die Regelung der Judenfrage in Böhmen und Mähren, which was under the jurisdiction of the RSHA.
The commandants were: Siegfried Seidl, November 1941 - July 1943; Anton Burger, July 1943 - February 1944, and Karl Rahm, February 1944 - May 1945.

All of the above were selected from Adolf Eichmanns staff, and as well as SS men; Czech gendarmes served as ghetto guards. The small fortress near the ghetto was used as an internment camp for political prisoners.
Terezin was first mentioned in a Nazi document on 10 October 1941. The plan was to concentrate there most of the Jews from the "Protectorate", Germany and other western European countries, particularly prominent persons, old people, or those who had served in the German Army during WW1. The Jews should be transferred from Terezin gradually to the death camps of Aktion Reinhard and Auschwitz.
Terezin also served to camouflage the extermination of the Jews from world opinion, by presenting it as a model Jewish settlement.

The Battle for Caen from June to August 1944 was a battle between Allied (primarily British and Canadian troops) and German forces during the Battle of Normandy. Originally the Allies aimed to take the French city of Caen, one of the largest cities in Normandy on D-Day. Caen was a vital objective for several reasons. First, it lay astride the Orne River and Caen Canal; these two water obstacles could strengthen a German defensive position if not crossed. Second, Caen was a road hub; in German hands it would enable the enemy to shift forces rapidly. Third, the area around Caen was relatively open, especially compared to the bocage country in the west of Normandy. This area was valued for airfield construction.

The Battle of Kursk refers to German and Soviet operations on the Eastern Front during World War II in the vicinity of the city of Kursk, (450 kilometres / 280 miles south of Moscow) in the Soviet Union in July and August 1943. It remains both the largest series of armored clashes, including the Battle of Prokhorovka, and the costliest single day of aerial warfare. It was the final strategic offensive the Germans were able to mount in the east. The resulting decisive Soviet victory gave the Red Army the strategic initiative for the rest of the war.

In World War II, the Battle of France, also known as the Fall of France, was the German invasion of France and the Low Countries, executed on 10 May 1940, which ended the Phoney War. The battle consisted of two main operations. In the first, Fall Gelb (Case Yellow), German armoured units pushed through the Ardennes, to cut off and surround the Allied units that had advanced into Belgium. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and many French soldiers were evacuated from Dunkirk in Operation Dynamo.

In the second operation, Fall Rot (Case Red), executed from 5 June, German forces outflanked the Maginot Line to attack the greater French territory. Italy declared war on France on 10 June. The French government fled to the city of Bordeaux, and Frances main city of Paris was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on 14 June. On the 17 June, Philippe Petain publicly announced France would ask for an armistice. On 22 June, an armistice was signed between France and Germany, going into effect on 25 June. For the Axis Powers, the campaign was a spectacular victory.
