World War II, or the Second World War (often abbreviated as WWII or WW2), was a global military conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945 which involved most of the world's nations, including all of the great powers, organised into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised. In a state of "total war", the major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by significant action against civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it was the deadliest conflict in human history, and it has been estimated that it resulted in fifty million to over seventy million fatalities.

During the chaos and destruction of WWII, ordinary men and women from all walks of life were thrown into fearsome, real-life situations worthy of any Hollywood movie - the only difference is that this series every story is true. Ordinary GIs and US Air Force and Navy personnel suddenly found themselves flying against the Japanese in China, jungle fighting in Burma and being dropped by submarine on enemy coasts at midnight. Each fifty-two minute story gives the viewer a clear view of the historical context, the strategic objective, and the tactical effort made by flyers, sailors and foot-soldiers – often in the most oppressive and life threatening situations – to win victory from the enemy.

BBC History of World War II is a 30-hour, 10-part, and 12-disc collection of documentaries about World War II.
The BBC History of World War II goes beyond even The World at War for its depth of scope, its breadth of analyses, and the high quality of its production values. This ambitious project by producer Laurence Rees, which also features a collector's booklet, is full of startling archival footage and illuminating eyewitness interviews that bring to life some of the most monumental events from the most monumental war in human history.

The focus on this set is clearly the war in Europe (only one disc, Horror in the East, is dedicated to the war with Japan) as told from an even-handed British perspective: interviews with German citizens make it understandable how Hitler appealed to a shattered and defeated nation, for example, and the The Road to War scrutinizes how a British government was caught unprepared for a re-armed Germany bent on domination. The collection is filled with poignantly fascinating moments, such as when an aging American veteran revisits the Omaha Beach he stormed on D-Day, and meets the elderly German who, as a teenager, was defending that section of the beach with his machine gun, or footage of Hitler's early political speeches, raging promises of things to come.

Roughly chronologically arranged, the set starts with The Nazis: A Warning from History, and works its way through all facets of the war, including the legacy of the Holocaust. (Some of the titles were previously released as single DVDs.) The presentation is particularly impressive. Each series has its own style: Dunkirk is a drama-documentary structured like a miniseries and reenactments are deftly interwoven with archival footage in a convincing motif. In War of the Century: When Hitler Fought Stalin, German and Russian veterans recall with chilling candor their particular universe of battle, and rare color combat footage combined with newly declassified Soviet documents offer new perspectives on the subject. The collection succeeds brilliantly in making it clear to a modern-day viewer what it was really like to live through those times.

For the war buff, the history enthusiast, the educator, or someone looking for a gift for any of the above, the BBC History of World War II is a title to consider. Even dedicated viewers of the History Channel will find something new and fascinating here. --Dan Vancini

In World War II: Behind Closed Doors, award winning documentary maker and historian Laurence Rees brings us a gripping new history of World War II one that is full of surprises, even for those who think they know the history. Drawing on material only available since the opening of archives in the East, Rees re-examines the key decisions made by Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt during the war. And as the truth about Stalins earlier friendly relationship with the Nazis is laid bare, a devastating and surprising picture of the Soviet leader emerges one that is deeply embarrassing for many Russians. The emotional core of the book is the amazing new testimony obtained from nearly a hundred separate witnesses from the period. Former Soviet secret policemen talk frankly for the first time about their repressive work; Allied seamen reveal how they braved the Arctic convoys; and Red Army veterans talk of how they killed Germans in hand-to-hand fighting on the Eastern Front. Accompanying a major six-part BBC2 history series, this enthralling narrative is a mix of high politics including the inside story of the Allies meetings at Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam and the dramatic personal experiences of those on the ground who bore the consequences of their decisions. Award-winning documentary-maker and historian Laurence Rees brings us a gripping new history of World War II.

"Triumph of the Will is one of the most important films ever made. Not because it documents evil--more watchable examples are being made today. And not as a historical example of blind propaganda--those (much shorter) movies are merely laughable now. No, Riefenstahl's masterpiece--and it is a masterpiece, politics aside--combines the strengths of documentary and propaganda into a single, overwhelmingly powerful visual force.
Riefenstahl was hired by the Reich to create an eternal record of the 1934 rally at Nuremberg, and that's exactly what she does. You might not become a Nazi after watching her film, but you will understand too clearly how Germany fell under Hitler's spell. The early crowd scenes remind one of nothing so much as Beatles concert footage (if only their fans were so well behaved!).
Like the fascists it monumentalizes, Triumph of the Will overlooks its own weaknesses--at nearly two hours, the speeches tend to drone on, and the repeated visual motifs are a little over-hypnotic, especially for modern viewers. But the occasional iconic vista (banners lining the streets of Nuremberg, Hitler parting a sea of 200,000 party members standing at attention) will electrify anyone into wakefulness."

Savant was eager to get his hands on Firestorm because it was directed by the German filmmaker Michael Kloft, the co-director with Kevin Brownlow of the fine documentary The Tramp and the Dictator, and the writer of the superb documentary The Goebbels Experiment. In addition, Firestorm is an in-depth assessment of one of the troubling policies of WW2 that led to the establishment of the Air Force as Americas foremost strategic security enforcer.Firestorm is told largely from the point of view of the victims of the allied bombing. The strategies and policies are discussed at length. The allies were committed to bombing as a long-term terror weapon that initially had little effect on German war production. The film shows the destruction in more detail than anything Ive seen. We all remember film images of German cities reduced to empty brick skeletons, but Firestorm shows color aerial views that seem to last minutes, and cover dozens of square miles of absolute ruin.

The concept of Total War didnt come with machine guns or deadly gas, but with governments willing to extend the violence of war to civilian populations. In Total War all enemy citizens are fair targets. Tens of thousands of non-combatants were killed in single raids simply because it was possible to do so. Experience in England had proven that bombing only stiffened the resolve of civilians to resist, and in any event the German population was incapable of overthrowing their Nazi leaders. Hitler and Goebbels boasted of Vengeance weapons and brought heavy losses to England and Holland with cruise missiles and space-age liquid-fueled rockets. But the allies visited true vengeance on Germany, paying back the aggressor nation a hundred times over.
Klofts film uses voiceover and interviews to record the unpublicized reality of the bombing campaigns. Bombing survivors, most of whom were children during the raids, talk about the orderly rush to the shelters. Historians discuss the way targets were chosen and the division of missions between the British, who flew by night, and the Americans and their daylight raids.
Defenders of bombing policy claimed that the stiff German defense mandated night bombing or high-altitude day bombing, which made discriminating between military and civilian targets impossible. That might be a good argument when the objective was a specific factory or a railroad yard, but in practice entire civic areas were simply carpet-bombed, even cities without organized war industry installations.
The docu goes back to original records to explain the discovery of the phenomenon called a firestorm. The intense heat rising from massed fires causes a hurricane-force draft that feeds oxygen to the center of the conflagration, turning a city into a furnace and asphyxiating even those people protected in air raid shelters. The military planners back in London realized that igniting hundreds of separate fires in a densely populated city could be more efficient than dropping heavy bombs. Magnesium-fed incendiaries were developed and dropped, and the effects recorded so that the munitions experts could make their weaponry more efficient. The notorious eradication of Dresden was not an isolated attack but part of a learning process. By that time, late in the war, enemy resistance in the air was almost nil. The Air Force brass was eager to gather research, for future use.
Firestorm instills a firm idea of the inhumanity of all this organized carnage, and doubtless the men who dropped the bombs would agree -- they interpreted warfare as simply giving the enemy hell in any and all ways possible. Kloft doesnt dwell on images of dead bodies, but those we see certainly have an effect. The show avoids political conclusions and makes no defenses for the Nazi government. Michael Kloft wisely stays within the hard evidence of his film resources and his witnesses, and allows us the freedom to decide for ourselves.

During the second Sino-Japanese War and World War II the Japanese military formed an infamous secret squadron whose goal was to research and develop biological and chemical warfare. This unit showed no remorse and carried out some of the most heinous experiments in human history on men, women, children, and infants. Thousands of civilian and military personnel were subjected to human experimentation.

Ping Fang was the headquarters of the Japanese Biological Warfare Unit 731. Often refered to as the “Asian Auschwitz” the facility had an airport, railway, dungeons medical facilities and an incinerator where the bodies of the victims were disposed of. The Japanese burnt most of Ping Fang to destroy the evidence of their crimes but the incinerator remains and is still used by a local factory that has taken over the complex.
In 1942, Shiro Ishii, began field tests of the germ warfare agents developed by Unit 731, He also began testing various methods of dispersion (i.e. via firearms, bombs, gas, clothing, etc.) on both Chinese prisoners of war as well as, operationally on battlefields and against civilians in Chinese cities. Some historians estimate that as many as, 200,000+ died as a result of the bio-weapons that were deployed. His unit also conducted physiological experiments on human subjects, including vivisections, forced abortions, simulated strokes, heart attacks, frostbite and hypothermia.
Arrested by the American authorities at the end of World War II, Ishii and Unit 731 leaders received immunity in 1946 from war-crimes prosecution before the Tokyo tribunal in exchange for germ warfare data based on human experimentation. Many of the scientists involved in Unit 731 went on to prominent careers in post-war politics, academia, business, and medicine. Ishii never spent any time in jail for his crimes and died at the age of 67 of throat cancer.

Initially set up under the Empire of Japan’s Kempeitai military police to develop weapons of mass destruction for potential use against Chinese, and Soviet forces. Unit 731, was officially disbanded in August of 1945, when the Russian’s invaded Manchukuo and discovered another of the highly secret Japanese programs. Unit 200 was researching bio warfare.

The "Ghetto Theresienstadt" was established in NW Czechoslavakia. Terezin (Theresienstadt) was founded as a garrison town in the late 18th Century, during the reign of Emperor Joseph II and named after his mother, Empress Maria Theresa.
In WW2 the town served as a ghetto to which the Nazis expelled 140,000 Jews, mostly from the "Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia", but also from central and western Europe. The ghetto was controlled by the Zentralamt für die Regelung der Judenfrage in Böhmen und Mähren, which was under the jurisdiction of the RSHA.
The commandants were: Siegfried Seidl, November 1941 - July 1943; Anton Burger, July 1943 - February 1944, and Karl Rahm, February 1944 - May 1945.

All of the above were selected from Adolf Eichmanns staff, and as well as SS men; Czech gendarmes served as ghetto guards. The small fortress near the ghetto was used as an internment camp for political prisoners.
Terezin was first mentioned in a Nazi document on 10 October 1941. The plan was to concentrate there most of the Jews from the "Protectorate", Germany and other western European countries, particularly prominent persons, old people, or those who had served in the German Army during WW1. The Jews should be transferred from Terezin gradually to the death camps of Aktion Reinhard and Auschwitz.
Terezin also served to camouflage the extermination of the Jews from world opinion, by presenting it as a model Jewish settlement.
